For many years, dentures and bridges were the options to remedy tooth loss. Dental implants, however, offer several advantages so you may want to have a discussion with your oral surgeon about what is best for you. In the meantime, here answers to a few commonly asked questions.

Are Dental Implants for Everyone?

While most people are qualified candidates for dental implants in Chicago, there are a few requirements. Your oral surgeon will be able to evaluate whether or not implants are the best solution for you. Factors to be considered include your overall health, jawbone density and your oral hygiene and life habits.

What Happens During and After the Dental Implant Process?

Before the procedure begins, you’ll be given appropriate sedation and local anesthesia. Then, a biocompatible titanium screw is placed in your jaw. Some bleeding and swelling at the site can be expected, but this should not last for more than a day or two. Be sure to take the medication your doctor prescribes.

A temporary crown placed over the implants protects your gums as they heal. During this time, the screw and surrounding bone tissue will fuse together to form a solid foundation. After a few months, you’ll return to your oral surgeon to have the permanent crown attached.

Is Dental Implant Surgery Painful?

This is a very common concern and a reasonable one. Although everyone has a different pain threshold, most people report little to no discomfort or pain during surgery. Your doctor will be certain to provide the correct level of sedation and anesthesia to make sure you are comfortable the entire time.

After surgery, you can manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers and reduce swelling with ice packs. Follow your post-op instructions, too.

What Type of Dental Implant is Right for Me?

Standard dental implants are placed individually and require several months for healing. On the other hand, Teeth in a Day may be a better option if you are missing all of the teeth along one arch. With this service, a couple of implants secure a full denture. Immediately after placing the implants, your oral surgeon will attach a temporary prosthetic. Once the implants have integrated in your jaw, the permanent dentures are secured into place.
