How to Minimize Bleeding After Having Your Tooth Pulled

January 25, 2021

Let’s face it: Having a tooth pulled by your dental professional is not exactly something you look forward to. The good news is that there are things you can do to minimize blood loss and discomfort after it’s all over.

At the office of Armitage Oral Surgery, we want to ease your pain and ensure your dental health at all stages of your life. Count on our skilled oral surgeons to evaluate your case and decide what course of action is best. Should your teeth require extraction, be confident that the process will be expertly performed and we will do our utmost to keep you comfortable and relaxed during the process.

Here’s what we recommend for post-surgery care:

  1. Apply Pressure - One of the best ways to minimize bleeding and to effectively stop bleeding from the socket where your tooth once was is to apply pressure to that area when you're at home.  Put a wad of cloth or gauze over the socket and bite down firmly. Keep pressure on the area for between 45 minutes and an hour to effectively stop the bleeding. You may have to do this several times during the first 24-hour period after surgery.
  2. The Tea Bag Trick - If standard pressure is not enough to stop the bleeding, a regular black tea bag may do the job, as it contains tannic acid, a substance that can help with bleeding issues. Just place the damp tea bag over the spot and leave it there for 45 minutes to an hour while applying slight pressure with your mouth. The tannic acid will help encourage a clot to form stopping the bleeding up.

If bleeding continues a day after your surgery, make an appointment with us immediately so we can evaluate the problem. At the office of Armitage Oral Surgery, your dental health is our top priority.
